The poster that this design was originally restored from was created in 1967, produced for the Soviet Union’s 50th anniversary of 1917.
This striking red-and-black Soviet poster, designed in 1967 by V. Kalensky, stages the revolution as a living command rather than a past event: a forward-pointing figure fills the frame while the slogan surges behind him in turbulent lettering, turning words into atmosphere and momentum.
The text reads: “Power to the Soviets! Peace to the Peoples! Land to the Peasants!” which compresses the Bolsheviks’ 1917 mass program into a single chant: authority should pass from the Russian Provisional Government to workers’ and soldiers’ councils (soviets), the imperial war should end in the name of ordinary people, and land should be taken from landlords and placed in the hands of the peasantry. In its original moment the formula worked as a rallying cry: legible at a glance, political at full volume. The poster functions as commemorative mythology: the founding promises revived as permanent identity, pointing the viewer toward an “unfinished” future that the state insists is already underway.
This design has been carefully restored by hand in order to preserve this important piece of history.
