"The revolution and women’s liberation go together. We do not talk of women’s emancipation as an act of charity or out of a surge of human compassion. It is a basic necessity for the revolution to triumph." - Thomas Sankara, 1987.

Thomas Sankara was a pan-Africanist Marxist revolutionary who served as President of Burkina Faso from 1983 until he was murdered during a French-backed coup. Over the course of his presidency, he led programs that vaccinated more than 2 million children, planted over 10 million trees, and reduced the infant morality rate by over 25 percent. Sankara emphasized self-reliance and rejection of predatory foreign aid from organization such as the International Monetary Fund as the only way to liberate Burkina Faso, and all of Africa, from imperialist exploitation.
