The legendary Mauser C96 "Broomhandle" pistol was produced from 1896 to 1937, and was the second semi-automatic pistol (after Hugo Borchardt's C-93) to receive commercial success, and the first mass-produced and commercially successful pistol to have a large-capacity, staggered-column magazine holding 10 or 20 rounds.
